This paper reviews the history of the safety profession in Europe, and identifies a number of questions and dilemmas about the the role that safety professionals play in risk prevention and control. Presents preliminary results from the analysis of OHS professionals' tasks in the first two countries currently available, Norway and The Netherlands.
