Agricultural practices have become more intensive in the past 50 years resulting in greater exposure of farmers to dust and bioaerosols, and a reported increase in respiratory illness in farm workers. As has been seen in industries like mining, dust and particulate matter can have severe negative effects on health, including development of conditions like miners lung and silicosis. The aim of this study was to undertake a review of available research on exposure of agricultural workers to dusts and bioaerosols in animal production facilities, and the potential risks to respiratory health. This study did not investigate exposures to gases and other chemical contaminants and their impact on respiratory disease.
