Abstract:
The issue of Europe’s ageing workforce has, over the last decade, emerged as a central priority for
policymakers in the EU. This demographic shift calls into question both the sustainability of pension systems and the future of Europe’s labour supply, which in turn raises questions about the prospects for economic growth. While policies and practices aimed at improving opportunities for older people have developed significantly in the EU15 in recent years, there has not been the same response in the new Member States and acceding countries.
This report explores the role and response of public actors, along with various measures implemented by public authorities, to promote the employment of older people in the new Member States and acceding countries. It also provides a comprehensive overview of case studies on age management initiatives in individual organisations in seven of the countries under consideration, ending with some recommendations for future policies and approaches.
