Developed by the Health and Safety Executive to help managers identify high risk manual handling jobs in the workplace. The system can be used to assess the risks posed by lifting, carrying and team manual handling activities. It is designed to help managers understand, interpret and categorise the level of risk of the various known risk factors associated with manual handling activities. The MAC tool uses a numerical score and a traffic light approach to indicate the level of risk, for example, green and a score of 0 for good; amber and a score of 1-4 for reasonable and red or purple and a score of 2-10 for poor. The MAC considers manual handling as three types of distinct operation: single lifting operations ; single carrying operations ; team handling operations.
