The project aim was to develop a model for ongoing injury surveillance at mass gathering events and to develop a formal process to identify hazards and rectify them in order to prevent further injury.

The project focussed on: The development of an efficient, practical system of data collection from two major events in SA during 2004: the Oakbank Easter Races & the Royal Adelaide Show; and The design of a communication model for coordinated & effective response to hazard identification across organisations.

Outcomes achieved included:

• A database that is practical, easy to use, efficient & enables ‘live/real time’ injury surveillance (the St John Injury Surveillance System); 
• Integration of the database into daily work patterns of St John volunteers;
• Development of a communication model, modified after each event, which ensured timely hazard notification & rectification by relevant organisations;
• Creation of benchmarks to enable future comparative analysis of presentations to St John at mass gathering events in SA;
• A strong cooperative vision for organisations involved in staging a public event for future mass gatherings within SA to ensure the highest levels of public & workplace safety.

As a result of this project it is anticipated there will be more formal mechanisms for timely hazard notification & rectification of identified risks across organisations including Workplace Services, the South Australian Police & event organisers.
