Abstract:
This study examines the prevalence of encounters of work-related violence among police patrol officers and security guards in Finland and the association between these and psychological health.

The results suggest that physical violence at work, as well as injuries caused by violence in police work, are associated with the psychological ill health of police officers and security personnel. Lack of psychological support after violent encounters may increase alcohol consumption, which was found in the study of police officers. Because violence seems to be a threat to mental wellbeing in security work, the prevention of violence and the way in which violent situations are handled are of great importance.
