Managers have peculiar problems in safety — they may adopt a risk management approach which aims to cut losses through programs which, happily, prevent accidents; or they may choose to adopt, an accident prevention stance which aims to reduce accidents and happily, cuts costs.
The author argues that neither approach can be criticised but managers should become aware whether their particular style is quantitative (QN) or qualitative (QL) — marked by left or right brain dominance or hemispheric specialisation. Thinking patterns, how a manager sees himself, and his attitudes towards safety will be reflected in his style and his behaviour. This sets the climate or atmosphere for all those around him and in the organisation as a whole.
